Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam

To brighten autumn in Amsterdam, there’s nothing like attending Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam in the Kromhouthal, an industrial location of over 5,000 meters square, at the end of October. After London, Amsterdam was the second European capital to host an Affordable Art Fair. The Amsterdam edition showcases contemporary art galleries exhibiting the work of local, national and international artists. Paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs: in Affordable Art Fair, visitors can all find a piece to start collecting with thousands of accessible artworks presented. In addition to the art fair, the public can enjoy art walks and talks, as well as artist-in-residence features. The group hosts many fairs all over the world as Affordable Art Fair Brussels, Affordable Art Fair Battersea or Affordable Art Fair Melbourne.

What is Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam DNA?

Our mission is to democratise the art world and have more people discover the joy of collecting art. Taking place at the end on October in De Kromhouthal in Amsterdam Noord, the fair is above all ‘gezellig’ and a fun environment for first-time buyers and experienced collectors alike. With 14,000 visitors and approximately 80 exhibitors, local, national and international, it’s a great place for visitors to experience the work of living artists, not only from across The Netherlands, but from all corners of the world.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

We are very proud to welcome galleries at varying stages of their careers. We have exhibitors who exhibit at the TEFAF (with their somewhat less ‘affordable works’) and we have galleries for whom this is their first art fair. Why? The fair is a great place to engage with new generations of art collectors and to host their existing clients in a stunning former car factory on the banks of the river.

What is the price range? Who buy?

The fair has a price ceiling of €7,500. We see everyone buying! From miniature sardine sculptures priced under €100 to Damian Hirst screenprints for a couple of thousands, there is a real breadth in what sells and who buys. Many galleries offer payment plans on higher priced items to encourage young collectors.

“The fair is above all ‘gezellig’ and a fun environment for first-time buyers and experienced collectors alike.”

Is there a typical Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam visitor?

We’re delighted to see that the fair attracts visitors of all generations and from all across The Netherlands. On Friday Night of the fair we host ‘Date Night’ where couples and singles alike join us for evening of falling in love with art. On Saturday morning we open early for families with kids to enjoy the fair before the weekend rush begins.

What is Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam special appeal?

Our sense of fun and inclusivity! From the glasses of bubbly on Opening Night and balloons for the kids on Saturday morning, to the enthusiastic exhibitors and fantastic fair team, we want to show our visitors that the art world is that they can enjoy and feel at home in.

What are two other art fairs you would suggest?

PULSE, for cutting edge curation and the emphasis they place on creating an amazing visitor experience. Miami, art, the sun and the beach are heaven in December as the Winter in Europe draws in. To welcome in the Spring there’s nowhere like NYC. VOLTA‘s new director, new venue and focus on solo projects will be a breath of fresh air. I’m excited for it!
