2022 was the edition of a double celebration for Art Basel: the 20th anniversary of its establishment in Miami and the arrival of Noah Horowitz at its head. It was also its largest show ever: 76,000 visitors came to meet the 282 leading international galleries on display from December 1 to 3 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. “The biggest edition in its history”, according to the organisers. A piece by Agnes Martin, on display at the Pace Gallery booth, sold for $7 million on November 29 at the VIP preview. “Our 20th edition was not only the biggest, but also the strongest in terms of the absolute quality of the works,” Marc Spiegler, outgoing CEO of Art Basel, told me in the aisles of the fair. “We are immensely proud of what has been achieved with our galleries, our partners and the city’s cultural community,” he added. Launched in 2002, Art Basel Miami Beach has undeniably transformed the seaside city of Miami into a contemporary art hub for a few days of the year.
