FIABCN
Showcasing contemporary art from established and emerging artists, FIABCN is an edgy fair which takes place each year in Barcelone, since 2011. The organizers truly aim to support young creation by taking it to an international audience. Indeed, thousands of visitors come annually from Spain and the rest of Europe to admire and purchase compelling artworks. Over the years, the show has become a meeting point for collectors, art dealers, artists and the public. Part of the FIABCN programme, an international prize – Barcelona International Art Awards or PIAB – rewards emerging talents among professional artists and amateurs. The mediums represented are multiple: drawing, printing, photography, digital art, sculpture, decorative art, among many others. The winners are announced on the last day of the fair.

What would you say is the DNA of FIABCN?
FIABCN is Barcelona’s most established and famous contemporary art fair, established in 2011 in the architectural jewel of Gaudi, the Casa Batlló. The essence of FIABCN is the curatorial process. The Curator Committee are members of a globally significant art community, and they set the high standard of the fair – ensuring that visitors can learn and buy from our exhibitors with the confidence that they are investing in the best of emerging and established talent. What makes FIABCN unique is that we are always adapting and evolving together with the city of Barcelona. The DNA of the art fair is related to the history, experience and diversity of Barcelona’s art scene and the Spanish collectors. They are known for their art collections that mix artworks from Miró, Picasso, Tàpies, Dalí, Goya, Velàzquez, … with the latest emerging artists from contemporary art.
What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?
A selection of around 120 established and emerging exhibitors from 37 different countries are selected to exhibit at FIABCN 2021. They are chosen because of their passion for painting and their personality in the art market. The selected exhibitors display a selection of artworks in different media such as painting, illustration, mixed media, photography, sculpture, digital art and installations. We offer the visitor a resume of all that is going on in contemporary art around the world. The art fair presents a wide range of styles from many different countries and cultures – putting across a variety of expressions, messages, themes and techniques.
What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?
You can find artworks from €250 to €150-200k. FIABCN buyers are both experienced and new collectors. We ensure that collectors can buy with the confidence that they are investing in the best price range of emerging and established talent.

Who is the typical attendee of FIABCN?
We do not have any specific audience, and we are not interested in addressing only one audience. Our audience is like the selection of artworks displayed in FIABCN, a wide variety of art lovers from all over the world.
What strategy – physical as digital – will you adopt in the short to medium term?
We are already offering digital art exhibitions through big screens during the art fair, and we are working on including an online viewing of the art fair. The strategy is to keep always updated to the reality of the art world. Online and digital has each time more presence, so we evolve together. On the other side, we are art romantics, and we still believe that the best way to appreciate an artwork is being in front of it. This way, you can feel and understand the power or combination of the colours, the size, the details, the backside, or even the smell of the paint. Our strategy focuses on finding a balance between the digital and physical.
What are two other art fairs you would suggest?
I highly suggest attending Art Basel Hong Kong, which has an excellent selection of galleries and a very complete and quality art programme.
I would also recommend 1-54 Marrakech because it’s an excellent opportunity to discover new talented artists from Africa and enjoy new trends and insights into the contemporary art scene.
